Shri Chakrapani Maharaj Jayanti: Life, Teachings, and the Spiritual History of the Mahanubhav Panth

Shri Chakrapani Maharaj Jayanti is a deeply revered spiritual festival celebrated with immense devotion by the followers of the Mahanubhav Sampradaya and the broader Bhakti tradition. This sacred day commemorates the birth anniversary of the divine saint, Shri Chakrapani Maharaj. Within the Mahanubhav Panth, the 'Pancha Krishna' (the five supreme manifestations of God) hold a central place, and Shri Chakrapani Maharaj is recognized as a principal pillar of this holy tradition. His life serves as an exemplary model of renunciation, detachment, equality, and unblemished devotion.

1. Birth and Family Background

According to tradition and historical sources, Shri Chakrapani Maharaj (also widely known as Changdev Raul) was born in the town of Phaltan, located within the Satara district of Maharashtra. His father was Janak Nayak and his mother was Janakaisa. Born into an ordinary household, he possessed an innate detachment from worldly attachments. From early childhood, his mind remained deeply engrossed in spirituality, contemplation of the divine, and the pursuit of the ultimate truth. Relinquishing worldly comforts and family ties, he embraced a life of asceticism and rigorous spiritual practice.

2. Place in the Mahanubhav Panth (Pancha Krishna)

In the Mahanubhav Sampradaya, five divine manifestations of God are revered as the 'Pancha Krishna':

  1. Shri Krishna

  2. Shri Dattatreya Prabhu

  3. Shri Chakrapani Maharaj

  4. Shri Govind Prabhu

  5. Sarvadnya Shri Chakradhar Swami

Among these five, Shri Chakrapani Maharaj occupies the position of the third guru. His spiritual contributions and teachings later served as the primary foundation for the expansion of the Mahanubhav Panth through Govind Prabhu and Sarvadnya Shri Chakradhar Swami. Rejecting societal evils and caste-based discrimination, he emphasized the purity of the soul and devotion to God.

3. Teachings and Core Principles

The teachings and philosophies of Shri Chakrapani Maharaj aimed to guide human society toward a higher path. His core principles include:

  • Unblemished Devotion (Nishkapat Bhakti): Pure and sincere love for God, free from any hypocrisy or complex rituals, is the true path to liberation.

  • Message of Equality: He taught that all living beings are equal in the eyes of the Almighty. Discrimination based on caste, class, or gender should never be practiced.

  • Detachment and Inner Purity: True union of the soul with the Supreme Being is impossible without freedom from material illusions and attachments. Renunciation and simplicity formed the core of his life.

  • Guru-Disciple Tradition: Humility and unwavering dedication toward a guru are essential on the spiritual path to attain true knowledge.

4. Jayanti Celebrations and Festivities

Shri Chakrapani Maharaj Jayanti is observed annually on Ashwin Krishna Paksha Navami according to the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious occasion, special programs are organized across Mahanubhav temples and ashrams in Maharashtra and various other regions.

  • Worship and Prayer: Devotees wake up early, take a sacred bath, and visit temples to offer prayers to the holy sandals (paduka) and idols of Shri Chakrapani Maharaj.
